Clear paths through the data jungle: the SIMPLIFY principle from IBCS

Welcome back to our series on the International Business Communication Standards (IBCS). In today's post, we face a key challenge in business communication: how can we simplify complex information without losing meaning? This is where the SIMPLIFY principle, the first element of the SUCCESS formula, comes into play.

What does SIMPLIFY mean?

SIMPLIFY is more than just a call to reduce complexity. It is a principle that aims to improve the clarity of information by removing unnecessary ballast and focusing on the essentials.

The challenge of simplification

In today's world of abundant data, it's tempting to share everything. But this information overload can lead to confusion and obscure the real message. SIMPLIFY encourages you to focus on the essentials and make sure the information is clear and understandable.

How can SIMPLIFY be used in practice?

1. identify the core message: Determine the main message of your communication. Anything that does not directly contribute to this should be checked and removed if necessary.

2. clear visualizations: Use meaningful diagrams and graphics to visualize data. A well-chosen visualization can make complex information understandable at a glance.

3. concise language: Formulate your messages in short, clear sentences. Avoid technical jargon if it is not absolutely necessary and explain complex terms if they need to be used.

4. reduction of details: Concentrate on the key aspects and reduce unnecessary details. Too much information can be overwhelming.

Conclusion

SIMPLIFY is the first step towards effective communication. It reminds us that less is often more, especially when it comes to conveying complex information. In the next post, we'll take a closer look at the second element of the SUCCESS formula, "UNIFY".
